My DNA Results Are In

I have recently received the results of my 111 marker STR test from Family Tree DNA. I am still awaiting an SNP test result for marker DF98.

It confirms that the Cheshire Group of Warburtons (10  have been tested) share a common ancestor with a group of 5 Duttons, and that this ancestor lived between 500-1200AD with a most likely date of 931AD. More work needs to be done on this date but it is consistent with the historical evidence that around 1260 Sir Peter de Dutton built a manor house on his estates at the village of Warburton (actually Werberton in those days) and was henceforth styled de (or of) Warburton. Sir Peter’s ancestor Odard was the first styled de Dutton following the Norman Conquest. The Dutton – Warburton common ancestor is therefore Odard, or one of his ancestors up to and including Sir Peter’s father Sir Geoffrey de Dutton who was born around 1200.

This is not definitive proof, but it confirms that this is the most likely scenario until it can be disproved.

It also means that the Warburton group is now part of a Dutton clan within the King’s Cluster. There is an R1b-U106 project at Family Tree DNA. The King’s Cluster is a subgroup within that and is maintained by Iain McDonald who has built an impressive phylogenetic tree.

You can see my chart comparing all the 15 Warburton and Dutton results here and Iain’s updated tree here.

I will include more details when I update My Genetic Links, which will be renamed The Cheshire Group (or similar) in the process.

  1. This is so interesting, I wish I was in contact with any males in my family so they could be tested.
It must be brilliant to have that much knowledge about your roots.

  2. Interesting idea seems a possibility. Maybe you can find some proof one day. There’s a challenge.
