The Warburtons of Swindon

Robert Warburton has sent me a booklet detailing his research into the Warburtons of Swindon. They represent a so far undocumented branch of the Radcliffe Clan, being connected to the Trowbridge branch of that clan. It describes Manoah Warburton (born 1850) and his descendants, most of whom worked for the Great Western Railway (GWR) at Swindon. The booklet includes many pictures, drawings, and copies of documents.

I have added the booklet to the Papers Page of the website. In due course I will use this material to add Manoah’s line to the Radcliffe clan.

Percy Warburton’s Teaching Record

Jeffrey Anderson sent me these photos of Percy Warburton’s Employment Record at Salford University. He found them as part of his research into L. S. Lowry who was a student of Percy’s. I covered the relationship between Percy and Lowry in this Post.

I have added them to the Other Artefacts Page under Galleries – Warburton Artefacts.

Warburton Golfers

Being a keen hacker around my local golf course I was intrigued when I discovered a 1901 census entry that described one William Warburton as a Golf Professional living in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, especially as William is descended from my 4x great grandfather. I then discovered his brother Ernest was also a Golf Professional in Kiel, Germany and wrote a Post about him.

The brothers are from a family of 8 brothers and 2 sisters, the children of John Warburton of Dunham Massey, a township near Altrincham, and in the parish of Bowdon. John’s father Joseph was the youngest son of my 4x great grandparents William and Ann nee Wright…

George Geoffrey’s Barometer

I was recently contacted by Tom Gaskill who sent me a photo of a barometer that was presented to his great grandfather Dr George Geoffrey Warburton (known as Geoffrey) in 1936. Geoffrey is in the Houghton Clan.

Eaten by Cannibals

Martin Warburton sent me a picture if a token to go with two that are already included in Warburton Artefacts (see Galleries -> Warburton Artefacts -> Other Artefacts).

Martin’s email included the following information: “I have recently been sent a couple of tokens from a New Zealand collector.  They are of the Warburton Iron, Zinc & Spouting Works in Melbourne.  Researching this came up with the attached info from the ‘Museums Victoria Collection’. ”

The attached info included the fact that the T Warburton described on the token had subsequently been killed by cannibals in Fiji in 1871. He had been born in Altrincham, Cheshire and arrived in Australia in 1853 with his new wife Martha nee Frost and established a thriving business.

Three Jonathans

I was recently contacted by Laura Visard whose husband is descended from a Jonathan who was born in Elton. She claimed William and Mary nee Yates as his parents. William and Mary are in the Bury and Massachusetts clan, but the clan tree gave their son Jonathan a different history.

Looking into this I identified 3 Jonathans born between 1800 and 1805 who died between 1872 and 1877. They are:….
